Dentures Q&A

What are dentures?

Dentures are an oral prosthesis that replaces some or all of the teeth in your mouth. They contain artificial teeth held in place by a gum-colored base, which sits on top of your gums and attaches through either suction or an adhesive.

There have been remarkable improvements in denture technology in recent years. Dentures today feel better and look more natural than those of the past. With dentures, you can finally enjoy having a smile that you love again.

Why should I get dentures?

By replacing your missing teeth, dentures offer a variety of benefits. They can:

  • Make it easier to chew your food
  • Improve your ability to speak
  • Boost your self-esteem
  • Support your facial muscles and keep your appearance intact

The team of professionals at Skyview Dental offers high-quality dentures for their patients that can significantly improve their quality of life.

What are the different types of dentures?

Dentures come in different varieties. If you’re replacing some, but not all, of the teeth in your smile, you should get partial dentures. Partial dentures have spaces in their base where you still have natural teeth, making it so that your artificial teeth and natural teeth work side-by-side.

If you’re replacing all of the teeth in your upper jaw, lower jaw, or both, you should get complete dentures. If you need extractions to make room for your complete dentures, then they can be further divided into two categories: immediate and conventional.

Dr. Mendez makes conventional dentures from an impression of your mouth after it’s had time to heal from your extractions. She can fabricate immediate dentures from an impression of your mouth before you have your extractions; this enables you to start wearing your dentures immediately after you have extractions.

Your jaw changes shape and shrinks after you get extractions, so immediate dentures require more relinings and refittings and are therefore more expensive. The advantage, however, is that they make it so that you don’t have to spend any time after your extractions without teeth.

How do dentures feel?

Once you get used to wearing your dentures, they feel like an essential component in your mouth and will improve the entire functioning of your oral system.

At first, however, dentures can take some getting used to. The muscles in your mouth need time to learn how to function with their new appliances. During your adjustment period, your dentures might feel loose or bulky in your mouth, and they might make your gums sore. Some people also experience an increased flow of saliva.

All of these sensations are totally normal and expected. After your mouth has trained itself to use your dentures properly, you feel better when you’re wearing them than when you’re not.
