Invisalign Q&A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment system and a modern solution to misaligned teeth. Rather than using brackets and wires like traditional braces, the Invisalign system consists of a sequence of plastic aligners that fit over your teeth and slowly push them to an ideal alignment.

A favorite feature of Invisalign is that the aligners are so thin and clear that others may not realize you’re wearing anything. You can undergo treatment subtly without having to worry about picture day or trying to conceal your braces at an important social event.

How does my Invisalign treatment start?

Before starting Invisalign, you need to have your teeth thoroughly evaluated to find out if the treatment is right for you. The team at Skyview Dental takes digital impressions of your teeth with a digital scanner. Using the digital images of your teeth and their roots, the team can accurately map out the way your teeth will move with Invisalign.

Additionally, your dentist can predict the amount of time your Invisalign treatment will take. This information helps you decide whether or not you can commit to the process.

Invisalign can treat the following types of misalignment:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Wide gaps
  • Crowded teeth
  • Open bite

Invisalign specializes in mild to moderate cases. If your teeth are severely misaligned, the team at Skyview Dental might recommend traditional braces instead.

How often would I wear Invisalign aligners?

While undergoing treatment with Invisalign, wearing your aligners often is the key to a hasty treatment. Dr. Mendez and the team recommend wearing your aligners for at least 20 hours per day, if not more, and only removing them to eat or brush your teeth.

Dr. Mendez tells you how often you need to progress to the next aligner in your series. Typically, you must use each aligner for a total of one or two weeks.

How do I clean Invisalign aligners?

Invisalign makes a specialty cleaning system specifically designed to deep clean their patented SmartTrack® plastic material. While the system is highly effective in clearing the plastic of plaque and bacteria, you can still get an effective clean with your toothbrush and toothpaste. Here are some helpful tips for cleaning and caring for your aligners:

  • Avoid hot water - use lukewarm water
  • Brush your aligners gently to avoid scratches
  • Brush your teeth and the aligners after every meal
  • Floss your teeth regularly to keep the aligners clean
  • Contact your dentist if you lose or break an aligner
  • Drink only water while wearing your aligners

Dr. Mendez gives you additional instructions to follow as you navigate treatment with Invisalign. If you have any questions, feel free to call the office for guidance.
