Crowns and Bridges Q&A

What are crowns?

Dental crowns are caps that go over the top of your tooth after it’s experienced significant damage or decay. Crowns are common when a notable portion of your tooth was removed during a root canal or when you break off part of a molar in an accident.

Made out of ceramic, metal, or both, the crown is shaped to restore your tooth’s shape. This protects your damaged tooth while giving you a sturdy chewing surface.

If you choose to get a ceramic or ceramic-on-metal crown, it is color-matched to fit in your smile perfectly and also restores the appearance of your tooth.

What are bridges?

Crowns aren’t just for teeth that need protection and restoration. They can also serve as a support system for replacement teeth.

If you’re missing one to a few consecutive teeth, with teeth on either side of the gap, you’re a candidate for a bridge. This is a replacement tooth or row of teeth customized to match your smile perfectly.

Dr. Mendez secures this bridge in your mouth by affixing it to two crowns, one on either end. She then cements these crowns to the teeth on either side of the gap in your smile, holding the bridge in place.

What’s the process like for getting crowns or bridges?

Whether you’re getting a crown or a bridge, the process is the same. Any tooth that is getting a crown has to be prepared.

During the preparation, Dr. Mendez removes a small amount of enamel from your tooth’s exterior. This creates space so the crown can lay flush with the neighboring teeth.

Then, she takes a mold of your prepared tooth and puts a temporary crown over it to protect it. Over the next two weeks, a dental lab creates your custom crown, shaping it and coloring it to give you a beautiful smile once it’s in place.

When your crown is ready, you return to Skyview Dental, and Dr. Mendez bonds it in place. You leave with a restored smile. Not only does it look full, but your crown or bridge is strong enough that you can eat, drink, and talk without fear.
